Question  Back to top
What does Fair Trade mean?
Answer

Fair Trade is an innovative, market-based approach to sustainability that restores balance to the power dynamic in the coffee supply chain. Fair Trade Certified™ means co-ops and their farmers get a fair price for their beans. Every pound sold has a minimum price they can count on and the prices exceed the co-op’s cost of production, increasing resources for health care and education and helping farmers feed their families.

To qualify for Fair Trade certification, farmers must belong to a democratically organized co-op. Because they get a fair price, these small family farmers can grow coffee with respect for the community and the land, avoiding cost-cutting practices that sacrifice quality and the environment’s health.

Question  Back to top
What is your decaf process?
Answer

We offer coffees that are both decaffeinated by a direct process and decaffeinated by a water process. The “water process” method that we use for our organic coffees, relies upon a "broth" of coffee solubles that saturate the beans and is then filtered through a charcoal media that selectively extracts the caffeine.

The “direct process” decaffeination uses a variety of FDA approved solvents, other than just water. These solvents are normally methylene chloride or ethyl acetate. The caffeine is bonded to the solvents and extracted from the coffee after it has been steam heated. The caffeine and solvent are then washed away and the coffee is re-dried.

Question  Back to top
Why do you have two separate bag sizes?
Answer

All of the Green Mountain Coffee® Fair Trade, Organic, Single Origin, Seasonal and Newman's Own coffees are packaged in 10oz bags. All Green Mountain Coffee® Signature coffees and Tully's Coffees are packaged in 12 oz bags. This is due to the fact that we pay a slightly higher price for the coffees sold in the 10oz bag.

Question  Back to top
Do K-Cup® packs, Vue™ packs, or brewers contain BPA?
Answer

All K-Cup® packs, Vue™ packs, and all water path components of Keurig® home brewers are free of Bisphenol-A (BPA).

Although some parts of the Keurig Brewers do contain BPA, these do not come in contact with the water or grinds used to brew fresh coffee. Neither the cold water reservoirs nor the internal water pipeline contains BPA. For more information regarding the FDA’s pronouncement about BPA, visit: http://www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/PublicHealthFocus/default.htm.

Question  Back to top
How many calories are in coffee?
Answer

All of our coffees are calorie-free. Visit the product detail page to view a nutrition label for Café Escapes®, Brew Over Ice®, and Green Mountain Naturals®.

Question  Back to top
What is the hole in my coffee bag?
Answer

The hole in the coffee bag is a degassing valve that is sealed into the packaging material to preserve coffee freshness. Freshly roasted coffee emits carbon dioxide (CO2) for up to 24 hours. We package our coffee immediately after roasting. To allow the degassing process to continue, we equip our bags with the degassing valve to allow C02 to exit the package while preventing oxygen and other gases from entering.

Question  Back to top
How should I store my K-Cup packs, Vue packs and/or bagged coffee?
Answer

We recommend storing unopened coffee in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Once opened, it should be stored in an airtight container. We do not recommend storing coffee in a refrigerator or freezer as it will absorb odors from the atmosphere.

Question  Back to top
The coffee that I’ve been purchasing for years doesn’t taste right. What could be the cause?
Answer

There are many factors that can turn an otherwise delicious cup of coffee into, well … something not so delicious. First, check the packaging. Has the package been damaged? Has the coffee expired? Secondly, what external factors have changed? Are you using new toothpaste? Mouthwash? Perfume? Dish soap? When was the last time you cleaned or descaled your brewer? Has your brewing method changed? If you’re using a new brewer, you may have to experiment to get the same flavor you’re used to. Lastly, consider how you’re storing your coffee. Coffee is easily contaminated by other chemicals or odors that are stored nearby.

If you still think there’s a problem with the quality of the coffee, please give us a call and we’ll be happy to exchange the product or research whether the batch was somehow altered by mistake in production.

Do your coffees contain fat or sugar?
Answer

Coffee and tea K-Cup® packs do not contain fat or sugar. A cup of regular black coffee will contain approximately 2-4 calories (less than 1 gram carbohydrates) and 0 fats. Flavored coffees will add 0.8 calories, 0.3 grams carbohydrates and 0 fats.

Question  Back to top
Are your K-Cup® or Vue™ packs recyclable?
Answer
The plastic cup used in our Vue™ packs is made of #5 plastic, so it can be recycled wherever #5 plastic is accepted. #5 plastic may not be currently accepted for recycling in your community. Check locally with your municipality or waste hauler, or visit www.vuerecycling.com for more information about recycling the Vue pack's plastic cups.

K-Cup® packs are not currently recyclable. The manufacturing requirements of the K-Cup® pack make recycling difficult at this point; however, we are actively working to meet the challenge of creating a pack for the K-Cup® brewing system that reduces environmental impact and delivers an extraordinary cup of coffee. The K-Cup® and Vue™ brewing systems operate differently and therefore have different requirements for materials.
Question  Back to top
Which of your products are Kosher?
Answer

Most K-Cup® portion packs are Kosher Certified Pareve. The only exceptions are hot cocoa, which are certified Kosher-Dairy. When a hot cocoa K-Cup® variety is brewed in a Keurig brewer, the brewer converts from Kosher Pareve to Kosher-Dairy and any subsequent K-Cup® packs brewed in this brewer would be classified Kosher-Dairy. If you want your Keurig brewer to remain Kosher Pareve, you'll need a second Keurig® brewer for brewing hot cocoa. Using a second K-Cup® holder will not keep the brewer Kosher Pareve.

Café Escapes® K-Cup® varieties are not Kosher certified.

Question  Back to top
Can K-Cup® or Vue™ packs be used more than once?
Answer

We do not recommend using K-cup® or Vue™ packs more than once. Although it’s not harmful to do so, the taste quality will be considerably lowered.
