Like many of its neighbors, the Lerida Estate can trace its engineering influences back to the construction of the Panama Canal. Estate founder Tollef B. Mönniche designed the emergency dams of the famed canal, and later used his ingenuity to design the country's first gravity-fed coffee processing plant. Today, people who visit the Lerida Estate may be just as interested in quetzals as coffee. The carefully preserved area is surrounded by virgin forests, and is considered one of the country's hot spots for bird watching.
