Tasting Notes

Our Kenyan is fruity and winey, with medium to heavy body and a rich blackberry finish. From the slopes of Mt. Kenya, through the Rift Valley, to the shores of Lake Victoria, the Kenyan coffee farmers patiently nurture coffee trees that produce some of the world's best coffee beans. The finest beans, graded AA, are sold at weekly auctions run by the Coffee Board of Kenya.

Rating: 88 Points (out of 100)
Distinguished by a sweet, gently tart fruit note in aroma and cup that reads as a sort of crisp orange- and chocolate-toned blackberry - or call it "black currant," a term for this flavor note in vogue among coffee describers. Whatever we call it, it is a precious and agreeable sensation. The body is medium and the mouthfeel silky at a 6-ounce serving, slightly thinnish and lean at 8. Rich finish with good flavor persistence and excellent stability as the cup cools.

Notes From Origin

From the slopes of Mt. Kenya through the Rift Valley to the shores of Lake Victoria, the Kenyan coffee farmers patiently nurture coffee trees that produce some of the world’s best coffee beans. These farmers, most of whom own small plantations of less than 4.5 hectares, pick only the ripe coffee cherries in a series of seven pickings to ensure excellent quality. The finest beans, graded AA, are sold at weekly auctions run by the Coffee Board of Kenya... nothing but the best price for the best coffee ensures these growers get what they deserve, and they deserve the best.

Most coffee professionals will cite Kenya as one of their top three origins, and more than any other origin; many will list it as their favorite. This is for many reasons: carefully selected cultivars, meticulous growing and processing practices, and a unique system of trade based on auctions managed by the central government that inherently rewards high quality with high prices.

If Antigua coffee is the high-altitude coffee’s Mecca in terms of bright, floral and spirited coffees, Kenya is its equal - or better - by way of its sophistication. Kenya has a manicured and polished personality that is regal, royal - even highly cultured - yet at the same time you sense a barely tamed wildness.

I like it just to have a good cup of coffee while I read the paper. It doesn't need cream and I only put a little sweetener in. It has a nice finish.

I like lot's of body without forcing it via a heavy (dark) roast. You can hide a not so good bean by roasting the begeebers out of it (dark roast), but a good bean has its own story to tell that comes through with a less than a dark roast, and when that comes with big body like Kenya AA, you're tasting coffee at its best!

Tried this coffee in a K-cup. It said that it was an extra bold coffee. It is not a bold coffee but a mild coffee. There is nothing great about it but the down side to this is that I bought 2 boxes. Yucky morning no BOLD coffee.

Comments about Green Mountain Coffee K-Cup Kenyan AA Extra Bold:

I received this coffee as a part of their Extra Bold variety pack. I love all the coffee's in the pack and have ordered most of them by themselves, including this one. Out of all the extra bolds I have tasted this one is the smoothest. It's list silk on my tongue. No bitter taste before or after. It's a lovely coffee. I use it in my K-cup at the 12oz along with 2 sugars and half n half. That may have something to do with my experience with this blend. I've read some people called it burnt flavor, well I didn't get that at all! For me it's the best of the extra bolds and I highly recommend it to everyone! A lot of K-Cup's loose their strength at the 12oz size, but not this one!

I'm new to Keurig K-Cups...and this is only the 3rd kind that I've tried thus far...but the Kenyan is good. It has good flavor and isn't acidic. I've been trying all of the varieties on the 8 oz. setting - trying to keep things consistent so that I can properly compare them to each other. I'll most likely drop the extra bolds down to 6 oz. just to make the flavor more pronounced...but even at 8 oz., I like this one. And its aroma while brewing is GREAT.

KCups. This was a great cup of coffee until last 200 KCups purchased. It is very bitter, acidic, with sharp aftertaste. I hope roast profile has not been altered like Green Mountain did with their Sumatran Reserve, and it is just recent crop of beans from region were below average.

After trying many k-cup flavors this one stands out because of its unique aroma and taste. Kenyan AA offers complexity that I haven't found in other k-cup flavors. Don't be frightened away by the Extra Bold label. This k-cup variety does not produce an extra bold cup of coffee - if that's what you want try Timothy's Midnight Magic.

I use Kenyan AA in the K-cups at the 8 ounce setting. This is a great cup of coffee. The aroma is pleasing, appetizing, the flavor complex and balanced. I don't like talking about fruits and nuts, when I'm talking about coffee, unless they're involved in a side dish that I'm eating with the coffee, but this Kenyan AA doesn't have the unpleasant acidity of many African coffees, none of the wood-like taste of some Sumatrans. No it rolls on the tongue smoothly and leaves no lingering, unpleasant tastes.
