Decaffeination Process
Celestial Seasonings Green and Black teas are decaffeinated using Carbon Dioxide (CO2), the same compound that plants breathe in daily. This process is also known as effervescent decaffeination.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is usually a gas. Under extreme high pressure during the decaffeination process, it becomes a liquid that is used to extract the caffeine from the tea leaf. After reducing the pressure, the CO2 becomes a gas again and disappears completely from the tea leaf. The temperature and pressure are carefully controlled to maximize the removal of caffeine and retain the beneficial compounds in the tea. Our decaffeination process does not employ harmful chemicals and the CO2 is recycled.
