Like many good things in life, we discovered this coffee almost by accident. Lindsey Bolger, our Head Coffee Buyer, traveled to Costa Rica and had the opportunity to "cup" (a formalized method of tasting) several exquisite samples from around the country. After exhaustive sessions of blind tastings, the peaberry sample was repeatedly among the highest scorers with its burst of citrus and ripe fruit with sweet and engaging brown sugar notes.

Flavor Chart

So, what's a peaberry? Glad you asked! While most coffee cherries produce two beans, a select few yield only one. These robust, round beans are called peaberries and are found in only 4-5% of the coffee harvest. During processing, they are carefully hand sorted and put aside because they are highly prized by connoisseurs for their balance and intensity of flavor.

Also available in our darker roast.

A versatile coffee that performs well in auto-drip brewers, or manual-drip (pour-over filter cone or Chemex). Exceptional in a coffee press and vacuum pot. Makes a very nice cold-filtered concentrate and an intriguing single-origin espresso.

Costa Rica is known for producing a clean, balanced coffee with bright citrus notes and a crisp finish. Our Costa Rican Peaberry Select displays all of the classic characteristics of the region—in one little round bean.

Some people in coffee-growing communities believe the peaberry is an aphrodisiac. We won’t guarantee that, but we will say our Costa Rican Peaberry Select is a unique interpretation of the classic Costa Rican profile. It has the beautiful balance of aroma, body and acidity found in the finest Costa Rican coffees, presented in the magic of a rare, single bean.

Is it due to the high altitude in which the coffee is grown? The rich volcanic soil or the daily cloud cover that produces perfect rainfall? Is it the shape or the higher density of the little round beauties? Perhaps it was some combination of all these things that gave this peaberry its balanced intensity of flavors in the cup.
