"This motif is another variation on the Kawung motif, with the same inherent meaning. The Kawung Sari Ukel is in particular associated with human behavior. In this motif the four red petals of the central motif represent four different directions life can take. These are centralized around the inner sun-like patterns that represent the ultimate direction, that toward the universal energy source. It is hoped that we would focus our life's direction towards deeper meaning, drawing from the divine.
The hand made batik crafts of Lila Designs are exclusively crafted by artisans living in traditional cillages of java, Indonesia. By using time-honored techniques of applying waxes and dyes to wood, these craftspeople are able to create vibrant designs drawing on traditional and ancient motifs. THe richness of the color is distinctive on our masks as it is sunken deep within the wood to give depth not normally felt if simply painted on the surface."
