#T41129  Nicaraguan Cashew Tree Vase $74.95

This extraordinary vase is handmade by Silvio Potosme Gallegos, a potter from San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua. Its bold hibuscus pattern is inspired by traditional, pre-Columbian designs and today's natural world. It is hand-thrown, etched, colored with mineral oxide, and fired in a brick kiln to bring out the sumptuous colors of cinnamon, sage, and papaya.

For the village of San Juan de Oriente, Hugged by the Masaya and Mombacho volcanoes, pottery is much more than a craft —it is an ancient art that the Nahuatl tribe has passed down from generation to generation for the last 3,000 years. San Juan de Oriente first became notorious for its fine pottery among Spanish colonials; they referred to the village as San Juan de los Platos (the dishes). While many things have changed in this remote village, the process artists use to create their art remains rooted in the villages traditions. Artists use ox-pulled carts to transport their clay from the fields surrounding their village; they use hand-made adobe ovens to bake their work; and they village continues to make the finest Nicaraguan pottery.
